Attributes of God

Creator  -  Self-Existent  -  Heavenly Father  -  Loving  -  Eternal  -  Forgiving and Merciful  -  Everywhere (Omnipresent)  -  All Seeing and All Knowing (Omniscient)  -  Unchanging  -  Honest  -  Faithful  -  Spirit  -  Intelligent  -  Righteous  -  Almighty (Omnipotent)  -  Unique  -  Sovereign  -  Holy  -  Jesus is God


God is The Creator

In Genesis Chapter 1 it says...
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth...

Then God spoke various parts of creation into existence by saying...
  • "Let there be light,"

  • "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." ...
  • God called the expanse "sky."
  • "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear."

  • "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds."

  • "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years..."

  • "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."

  • "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind."

  • "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."


  • Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. - Isaiah 40:28

    For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. - Romans 1:20

    Self-existent

    The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. - Acts 17:24-25

    God said to Moses, "I am who I am . [a] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " - Exodus 3:14      [a] Or "I will be what I will be"

    God is our Heavenly Father

    Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. - Isaiah 64:8

    Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." - Galatians 4:6

    How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. - 1 John 3:1

    For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." - Romans 8:15

    "This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name..." - Matthew 6:9

    Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. - Hebrews 12:10

    God is Loving

    This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. - 1 John 4:10

    This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. - 1 John 4:9

    For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:38

    And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. - Ephesians 3:17b-19

    Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." - John 14:21

    And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. - 1 John 4:16

    God is Eternal

    Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. - Isaiah 40:28

    Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. - Psalm 90:2

    For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6

    God is Forgiving and Merciful

    If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. - 1 John 1:9

    For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath. - Deuteronomy 4:31

    The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; - Daniel 9:9

    You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. - Psalm 86:5S

    But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. - Nehemiah 9:17b

    The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.- Numbers 14:18a

    God is Everywhere (Omnipresent)

    Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

    If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

    If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

    If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. - Psalm 139:7-12

    And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. - Ephesians 2:22

    God is All Seeing and All Knowing (Omniscient)

    The LORD knows the thoughts of man; he knows that they are futile. - Psalm 94:11

    Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit. - Psalm 147:5

    Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. - Hebrews 4:13

    God is Unchanging

    Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. - James 1:17

    I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. - Malachi 3:6

    Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. - Hebrews 6:17

    God is Honest

    God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? - Numbers 23:19

    God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. - Hebrews 6:18

    God is Faithful

    For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. - Psalm 57:10

    For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD. - Psalm 117:2

    Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. - Lamentations 3:22-23

    No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. - 1 Cor. 10:13

    God is Is Spirit

    God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. - John 4:24

    God is Intelligent

    As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. - Isaiah 55:9

    "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool." - Isaiah 1:18

    God is Righteous

    Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker? - Job 4:17

    Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, you who have done great things. Who, O God, is like you? - Psalm 71:19

    And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge. - Psalm 50:6

    The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. - Psalm 116:5

    O LORD, God of Israel, you are righteous! - Ezra 9:15a

    The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation. - Numbers 14:18

    God is Almighty (Omnipotent)

    Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." - Matthew 19:26

    Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. - Jeremiah 32:17

    When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless. - Genesis 17:1

    Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit. - Psalm 147:5

    God is Unique

    "Tomorrow," Pharaoh said. Moses replied, "It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the LORD our God." - Exodus 8:10

    For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. - 1 Corinthians 8:6

    God is Sovereign

    He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. - Daniel 7:14

    The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases. - Proverbs 21:1

    The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men. - Daniel 4:17

    ...God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. - 1 Timothy 6:15b-16

    You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD." - Ezekiel 23:49

    God is Holy

    And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." - Isaiah 6:3

    Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." - Revelation 4:8

    I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy - Leviticus 11:44a

    Jesus is God

    Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." - John 20:28-29

    In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - John 1:1

    I and the Father are one. - John 10:30

    "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!*" At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. - John 8:58-59

        *"I am" used here refers to a Hebrew name for "God".
