The problem with sin is huge! The problem becomes even more of an issue when we don’t realize how bad off we really are. One writer, James Montgomery Boice, has put it this way: “It is a sad, harmful, and evil characteristic of sin not to recognize how serious it is and to excuse it by treating it lightly.”
God, who is totally holy and has never sinned, hasn’t been duped by sin either. He fully understands the extent of our unbelief and rebellion to Him. He also knows that we are totally helpless to rescue ourselves out of this mess and avoid the coming day-in-court when God Himself will be the presiding Judge. |
Many people, at this point, will say things like: “God that’s not fair! You gotta give me another chance.” Or “Go easy on me God. Remember, I’ve tried to be a good person.” Or even, “How can a ‘loving’ God send anyone to Hell?”
The Bible tells us that God is not obligated to do anything to help us (“Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him” (Romans 11:35)?). We all have rejected God as King through our unbelief and sin, and live as criminals and rebels according to His Kingdom’s laws.
The hope, however, is found in that before the creation of the world, God knew about the problem of sin, and was already at work. In His grace and mercy (which are really just undeserved favor and forgiveness), He was preparing to destroy the power of sin and death by sending His own Son, Jesus Christ, at just the right time to be punished for sin so that many might go free. The Bible pictures God’s plan of rescue through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ, as “the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). |
In other words, from God’s perspective it was already a done-deal before it even happened. And it’s not only a completed rescue operation, but also a kingdom as an inheritance. In the Gospel of Matthew, the Lord Jesus states, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.”
