That’s a pretty tough question to answer with so many saying they know who God is (and with so few agreeing) and others simply walking around as if they were a god! Actually, when you come right down to it, knowing anything about God is impossible, unless God reveals Himself to us.
In the Bible, we read that God has done that – revealed Himself to humans – through three different means.
First, we learn something about God through the universe around us. The Bible states: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).
So whether you study microbiology or just walk outside on a cloudless summer night, you begin to make some discoveries about God. You learn of His incredible power, knowledge, and wisdom through what He has made. You could also perceive that while we are all temporary, God existed long before the earth and does not depend on any of His creation for anything.
Second, God has revealed Himself to us by directly communicating with people throughout the centuries. Again from the Bible, we read: “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways” (Hebrews 1:1). What God said was written down, compiled, and preserved in the book we call the Bible.
It is through this more direct form of communication that God has told us so much about His attributes or character. We learn that He is Spirit, holy (totally pure), righteous (always does what is right), just (rewards and punishes people according to how they have responded to His goodness), unchanging, good to all people, and patient.
Third, God has revealed Himself to us by coming to earth in person. Jesus Christ is God come in the flesh – in a body. In speaking of Jesus, the Bible declares: “He is the image of the invisible God…For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him” (Colossians 1:15, 19). This is truly the culmination of all revelation. In fact, Jesus, in responding to one of His disciple’s questions, stated, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).
God has spoken to us through all of creation, through Scripture, and through Jesus Christ. We now have the opportunity to know God intimately.
